Question

An organic compound of molar mass greater than 100g mol1 contains only C, H & N. The mass of C is six times the mass of H, while the sum of mass of C & H is 1.5 times the mass of N.Then Least molecular mass28 is

Solution

Given, let the mass of H be w

massmolemolerratioC6w6w120.5=3Hww11=6N7w1.57w1.5×1413=2
So, the empirical formula = C3H6N2
Hence empirical formula mass = 70
Least possible molar mass = 140

Hence least possible molar mass28=14028=5
