Solution

Hi,

Compound X is ethanol which is an alcohol and important constituent of alcohol and beer.

Oxidation of ethanol leads to the formation of ethanoic acid which is constituent of vinegar.

Oxidation of ethanol :

CH3CH2OH -------> CH3COOH

So, Y is ethanoic acid and X is ethanol.
