Question

An ultrasonic sound sent from a ship travels with the speed 1530ms1 in sea water. How deep is the water if the time delay of the echo from the sea bed is 6s?

Solution

Here, the time is taken by the sound signal to travel from the ship to the ocean, and back to the ship is 6 seconds. so, the time taken by the sound signal to travel from the ship to the ocean will be half of this time, which is 62=3sec
It is given that the speed of sound in water is
V=1530m/s
Time is taken by the sound signal to reach the ship t=3sec
The depth of the ocean bottom, D=?
We have,
V=Dt or,
D=Vt
That is
S=1530×3=4590m

So, the depth of the ocean is 4590m
