Question

An uncharged capacitor is connected to a battery show that half the energy supplied by the battery is lost while charging the capacitors

Solution

Dear Student ,
Here in this case look if V be the voltage of the battery and q charge is accumulated in the batery then the energy supplied by the battery is , E = qV .
Now as we know that the energy stored in the capacitor while charging by a battery of voltage V is ,
E'=12CV2Again we know that q=CV so , E'=12CV×V=12qVSo the energy stored in the capacitor is 12qV .Now the enrgy lost is , E-E'=qV-12qV=12qVThis energy is lost by the battery during the charging of a capacitor due to the heating by the internal resistance and other resistances present in the circuit .
