The molecular formula C7H12 indicates two degrees of unsaturation. It can be either two pi bonds or two rings or a pi bond and a ring. But on hydrogenation two molcules of hydrogen are added to give C7H16. This indicates presence of two pi bonds. Hence, the molecule is acyclic in nature.
The unknown reacts with H2 in presence of Pd/CaCO3/PbO to give C7H14. Thus only one molecule of hydrogen is added.
This indicates that carbon carbon triple bond is reduced to carbon carbon double bond.
Thus the unknown hydrocarbon is an alkyne.
