Solution

The correct option is B R=R2
All the null points will correspond to the balanced condition of formed Wheatstone bridge.

At null point,

XR=l1l2

X=R(l1l2)

Here, R is a constant and l1, l2 are variables.

So, the maximum fractional error is

ΔXX=Δl1l1+Δl2l2

Here, for small variables let Δl1=Δl2=y,

ΔXX=y[l2+l1l1l2]

Now for ΔXX to be minimum (most accurate readings)

l1l2 should be maximum, because l1+l2=1 m=constant

Now, let z=l1l2

z=l1(1l1)=l1l21

differentiate both sides w.r.t l1 ans equally to zero.

dzdl1=12l1=0

l1=1/2 m

Similarly, we get

l2=112=12m

l1=l2=12 m

It corresponds to null point B i.e R=R2 where distance of null point is half the length.

R=R2 gives the most accurate reading.
