A three tier judicial machinery was setup under COPRA in 1986 at the District, State and National level for redressal of consumer disputes.
1) District level courts deal with cases involving upto Rs 20 lacs.
2) State level courts deal with cases between 20 lacs to 1 crore.
3) National level courts deal with cases of more than 1 crore.
In India, the consumer movement as a social force has originated with understanding the necessity of protecting the interests of the consumers against unethical and unfair trade practises. The COPRA has helped in greater accessibility of legal action against these practises. It Instills a faith amongst the consumers regarding the legal system of the country. It also has acted as a deterrent against unfair trade practises. In the process it has helped in greater quality for the consumers at affordable prices.
