Question

Ananya's grandfather collects rainwater in an overhead tank. He says this is a good practice because it helps him conserve water. Ananya thinks this is not right because rain water is responsible for recharging of ground water and collecting it would hamper the recharging of ground water. This practice would decrease water table and would make it difficult for us to access water. Who do you think is correct? [3 MARKS]

Solution

Explanation : 3 Marks

It's true that rainfall is a major source for recharging ground water but collecting rain water is a good practice. Generally, rain water flows through the ground to the rivers, ponds and lakes. In this process rain water seeps through the ground and recharges ground water. But, in comparison to the amount of water we receive as rainfall, the amount of water we can collect is negligible. Also, the water we use goes into the sewage which is ultimately treated and let out into rivers. From there it goes into the groundwater through infiltration. Moreover, the rain water can be used for our day to day works and in order to access the same water as ground water we need to dig wells or bore holes to setup a pipe system. So, we see that collecting rain water is a good habit and Ananya's grandfather is correct.
