Question

Anisole is less reactive than phenol towards electrophilic substitution reactions. Why ?

Open in App
Solution

There is methoxy group OCH3 attached at Anisole which shows +I effect and decreases the electron density. the reactivity is lower than that of phenols because the methyl group present on the methoxy substituent makes the oxygen less donating in nature thus reducing the activation of the ring.
