Anjali took sand, red soil, gravel and soil from a forest in four test tubes. She then poured hydrogen peroxide into each test tube. Which test tube will produce the highest effervescence?
Test tube with forest soil.
The effervescence produced when hydrogen peroxide is poured is due to the oxygen that evolves during the dissociation of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide dissociates faster in soil with high organic content. The soil from the forest has maximum organic content and is most fertile as compared to red soil, sand and gravel. Therefore, the test tube having soil from the forest will produce the highest effervescence followed by red soil, sand and gravel.
