Given that Both Romy and Annie scored equal marks
$\Rightarrow x-20=\frac{x}{2}$
Place unknown terms in left hand side and constants in the right hand side
$\Rightarrow x-\frac{x}{2}=20$
$\Rightarrow \frac{x}{2}=20$
Multiply by 2 on sides of equation
$\Rightarrow 2\times \frac{x}{2}=2\times 20$
$\Rightarrow x=40$
