Dear student,
There are elements of absurdity and exaggeration that bring out the slapstick nature of the story 'The Proposal'.The practical joke played by Tschubukov adds to the humour: instead of telling his daughter that Lumov has come to propose marriage, informs her that there is "a dealer who has come to buy something." Lumov is unable to propose due to one reason or the other. The fight between the two young people is over petty issues of dogs and meadows. The reactions of the characters are exaggerated: staggering, becoming hysterical, groaning. Clever characterisation and slapstick elements add to the humour.
