Answer in brief :
(a) How are mixtures formed?
(b) Why do we need to separate substances from their mixtures?
(c) Name the methods used to separate substances from mixtures.
(d) What is sublimation?
(a) Mixtures are formed by a combination or mixing of two or more different substances.
Example: Air is a mixture of several gases.
(b) When two or more substances are mixed together, we call it a mixture. Sometimes, different components of a mixture are not useful or may even be harmful. Therefore, the different components of the mixture need to be separated. .
For example: After preparing tea, the tea leaves are not useful and so, they are separated by filtration.
(c) Methods used to separate substances from their mixtures:
• Threshing
• Winnowing
• Sifting
• Picking
• Setting
• Filtration
• Sublimation
• Using the magnetic property
(d) Sublimation: The process in which a solid, on heating, gets converted into gas without changing into a liquid state is called sublimation. For example, Iodine, Camphor etc. are sublimating substances i.e., they undergo sublimation.
