(a) There are two components of environment - biotic and abiotic components. Biotic components include plants animals and humans whereas abiotic components include water, soil and air.
(b) Water is used on a large scale in industries for the manufacturing of paper, sugar, steel and medicines.
(c) Water in the reservoir gets contaminated when it gets mixed with water containing chemicals or with sewage water.
(d) The different factors which cause air pollution are smoke emitted by vehicles, the burning of fossil fuels, emission of harmful smoke from factory chimneys, nuclear explosions and the leakage of radioactive materials.
(e) Effects of a polluted environment are as follows:
(i) It leads to the death of many endangered organisms.
(ii) It helps to spread various diseases related to lungs, skin and heart.
(iii) The fertility of soil decreases resulting in the low production of crops.
(iv) The overall temperature of the planet increases which causes the melting of polar ice caps, rise in the sea level and the submerging of the coastal areas.
(f) In the past the small amount of garbage (mostly biodegradable) was produced in the villages due to the small population. Villagers used to collect this garbage and dump it in open spaces.
