(a) What must each person do to reduce the problem of garbage disposal?
(b) What care must be taken to prevent contamination of the town or village water supply?
(c) What are the adverse effects of the increasing population on the problem of garbage disposal?
(d) What care should be taken in order to maintain good social health in a village or town?
(a) Following steps should be taken to reduce the problem of garbage disposal:
• Use paper bags instead of plastic bags.
• Dispose plastic wastes properly rather than burning them.
• Do not throw garbage on roadsides rather dispose them properly in dustbins.
• Garbage should be disposed in different coloured dustbins which represent the types of materials that they cater to.
(b)
• Garbage should not be thrown in water bodies because these bodies act as the key source of drinking water.
• There should be huge distance between the drinking water supply pipes and sewage pipes so that if any of the sewage pipes leak, it will not result in the contamination of drinking water.
• Industries should not dispose their waste in the rivers as it affects both aquatic and human life.
• Proper addition of chemicals such as chlorine should be practiced in order to kill the microbes present in the water.
• Various religious and domestic activities pollute the water bodies to a great extent. Hence, it should be strictly banned.
(c) As the population is increasing, the consumption of commodities is also increasing, which ultimately is resulting into generation of increased amount of garbage. But the space for disposal of garbage is not increasing. Hence, there is scarcity of space for the proper disposal of garbage.
(d) Steps to maintain good social health in a village or town are:
(i) The municipality of every city/town should provide proper dustbins at public places and come up with proper methods for the disposal of different kinds of waste.
(ii) Insecticides should be sprayed once or twice in a week to kill the mosquitoes, keeping in mind that it should not be harmful to humans.
(iii) The use of paper bags instead of plastic bags for shopping and storage should be promoted.
(iv) Used or waste materials should be recycled to make new and usable things.
