Solution

Dear Student,

Rainfall decreases from east to west in northern plains because of the following reason:

a. The windward side of the Western Ghats receives more than 250 cm of heavy rainfall.
b. The highest average rainfall in the world is received by Mawsynram, lying in the Southern range of the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya.

c. It causes bulk of rainfall from south west monsoon, as these winds blow over warm oceans , they carry abundant moisture with them and causes rainfall in the sub continent.
d. The
rain shadow area on the other hand receives scanty rainfall as, the moisture laden winds shed all their moisture in the north-eastern part of the country, thus rainfall decreases from east to west.
e. This results in regions like Rajasthan , Gujarat receiving scanty /less rainfall.
