Answer the following:
i. Which number will we reach if we move 4 places to the right of -2?
ii. Which number will we reach if we move 5 places to the left of 1?
iii. If we are at -8 on the number line, in which direction should we move to reach -13?
iv. If we are at -6 on the number line, in which direction should we move to reach -1?
i. 2, ii. -4, iii. left, iv. right
On a number line, if we are moving towards right then its considered as '+' and moving towards the left is considered as '-'
So, moving 4 numbers to the right of -2 means -2 + 4 = 2
Moving 5 numbers to the left of 1 means 1 - 5 = - 4
If we are at - 8 on the number line and we have to reach to -13 then this means -8 + x = - 13 where x is the distance to be moved either in left or right direction.
⇒ x = -13 + 8 = -5.
⇒ We have to move 5 numbers towards left (since -5 has a negative sign) to reach -13.
If we are at -6 on the number line and we have to reach -1 then this means -6 + x = -1 where x is the distance to be moved either in left or right direction.
⇒ x = -1 + 6 = 5.
⇒ We have to move 5 numbers towards the right (since 5 has a positive sign) to reach -1.
