Answer the following:
i. Which number will we reach if we move 4 units to the right of -2?
ii. Which number will we reach if we move 5 units to the left of 1?
iii. If we are at -8 on the number line, in which direction should we move to reach -13?
iv. If we are at -6 on the number line, in which direction should we move to reach -1?
i. 2, ii. -4, iii. left, iv. right
On a number line, if we are moving towards right then its considered as + and moving towards left is considered as -.
(i) Moving 4 units to the right of -2 is -2 + 4 = 2
(ii) Moving 5 units to the left of 1 is 1 - 5 = -4
(iii) -8 + x = -13 where x is the distance to be moved either in left or right direction.
⇒ x = -13+8=-5.
⇒ we have to move 5 units towards left (since -5 has a negative sign) to reach -13.
(iv) -6 + x = -1 where x is the distance to be moved either in left or right direction.
⇒ x = -1+6=5.
⇒ we have to move 5 units towards right (since 5 has a positive sign) to reach -1.
