The revolt of 1857 marked the closing of an era
and the beginning of a new one in the history of British rule in India.
The revolt of 1857 was a harbinger of a new age as it marked the end of East India Company's rule in India and the beginning of the rule of British Government controlled by the British crown. The British parliament created the office of Secretary of State for India and appointed a council of 15 members to aid and advise him.
The revolt of 1857 coincided with certain outside events in which the British suffered serious losses the First Afghan War (1838-42), Punjab Wars (1845-49), Crimean Wars (1854-56), Santhal rebellion (1855-57). These had obvious psychological repercussions.
