Why does a piece of iron float in mercury but sinks in water?

  1. If an object has more density than a liquid, it will sink in that liquid.
  2. Similarly, if an object has less density than a liquid, it will float in that liquid.
  3. The density of the iron nail is larger than the density of water. Hence, it will sink in water.
  4. But, the density of the iron nail is less than the density of mercury. Hence, it will float in the mercury.
