Why was Gandhiji against peasants going to courts for justice ?

Lawyers often charged a big fee to fight peasant cases in courts. Gandhi chided the lawyers for doing this. According to him, fighting peasant cases in courts did not yield any results. The bigger problem was that the peasant were oppressed and crushed by fear. So they needed to learn to be fearless first. Hence he was against peasants going to the courts for justice.
