• Agriculture is the main occupation in the Deccan Plateau region. Rice is grown on the eastern part whereas wheat and pulses are produced in the northern part. Jowar, Cotton, Sugarcane and oilseeds are grown mostly in the Maharashtra plateau and Bajra is predominant in the western part of the plateau.
• Lakes constitute the backbone of irrigation. Bhandaras i.e check dams built across the river are used to raise the level of water to guide it into channels. It is crucial for sugarcane and rice cultivation.
• Tanks called Kere in Kannada are predominant traditional method of irrigation in the Central Karnataka Plateau.
• Thus, since agriculture is the main occupation in the region, irrigation plays a significant role in obtaining increased yields from the land.
