Solution

1. When the poet says that the mirror has no preconceptions it means:

(i) it reflects your image objectively

2. The mirror is described as being ‘unmisted’ because it faithfully shows whatever comes in front of it. The image that the poet is trying to convey is of a mirror that does not distort reality.

3. The mirror ‘swallows’ by showing the reflection of the object that comes in front of it. The poetic device used here is personification.

4. Words used to describe the mirror:

silver, exact, not cruel, truthful, eye of a little god, four-cornered, lake, important

5. The mirror has been called a four-cornered God because:

(i) it is square shaped

6. The mirror spends its time by meditating on the opposite wall.

7. Faces and darkness disturb its contemplation of the opposite wall.

8. The ‘pink speckles’ refer to:

(i) the opposite wall that is pink

9. In the second stanza, the mirror is compared to a lake. This comparison is made because of the image of the woman who comes to see herself in the mirror. Every time the woman stands in front of the mirror, the image appears as if it has emerged from a lake.

10. The woman is searching for her real identity in the depths of the pool.

11. The phrase ‘agitation of hands’ means:

(i) the person is very upset

12. She starts crying because the candles and the moon have lied to her about who she is.

13. The stanza begins with the mirror being compared to a lake. Thus, the image of the woman emerging from it is like a fish.

The loss of youth every time the woman sees herself in the mirror is because of the destructive process of ageing, which is terrible.
