Question 8
Answer the following questions:
A. Why is sliding friction less than static friction between the same surfaces?
B. A book of mass 1 kg is kept at rest on a table. The maximum value of static friction is 200 N and sliding friction is 180 N.
i. If we apply a force of 190 N, will the body move?
ii. If we apply a force of 210 N, will the body move?
A. Sliding friction is less than static friction because when the object starts sliding, the contact points on its surface do not get enough time to lock into the contact points on the other surface.
B. i. No, the body will stay at rest as the applied force is less than the maximum value of static friction.
ii. Yes, the body will start moving as the applied force is greater than the maximum value of static friction.
