Why does the poet call rain as earthly life?
(a) Rain is divine because it quenches the thirst of the dry earth and makes it blossom. Rain infuses new life in plants and trees and is therefore divine.
(b) Various functions performed by rain
(1) It gives new life to drying plants and trees
(2) It irrigates fields and increases agricultural production
(3) It gives relief from the scorching summer heat
(4) Rain makes the earth beautiful by facilitating the growth of vegetation and flowers
(c) Cry: Thunderous rain, falling with great intensity.
Humble: Light showers continuing for a long duration.
Bow: Drizzling rain in which everyone feels happy and enjoys the rain.
(d) Before it rains, the fields are dry and there is very little vegetation cover. Rain quenches the thirst of the fields by watering them. Before the rain, clouds contain a lot of water vapour and are very bulky. Rains cure the clouds of their ailment by falling down on earth, thereby making the clouds lighter.

(f) By the above lines, the poet wants to convey that all know that it’s raining but only a few understand its importance. Everyone can hear the sound of the falling rain but only a few i.e., dry land, flowers, trees, farmer etc. cherish that sound and feel delighted.
(g) (i) Sigh of the sea: This means that the sea heaves a sigh of relief when it rains because it gets assured of a steady supply of fresh water through rains.
Laughter of the field: Rains are the laughter of fields because they make the fields green and prosperous.
Tears of heaven: Rains signify the tears of heaven. When it rains, it seems as if the heaven is crying and shedding its entire burden in the form of tears.
(ii) Rain acts as an agent of floods by filling the rivers so much so that they start overflowing, which results in floods.
Rains are a source of water for dams because they fill-up the reservoirs of dams and also increase the quantity of water in the rivers on which dams are built.
(h) Poet describes the rain as earthly life because it gives life to the dying plants and trees and also irrigates the dry fields, thereby facilitating the growth of new saplings.
