  1. When a person moves from a dark or dim-lit area to a brightly lit area, the visual purple of rods is bleached reducing their sensitivity and pupil constricting to reduce the amount of light entering the eyes. This is a light adaptation.
  2. When a person moves from a brightly lit area to a dark area, the visual purple of rods that were earlier broken due to bright light regenerates and the pupil dilates to allow more light to enter. This is a dark adaptation.
