Question

Answer the following questions:

Graphite conducts electricity whereas diamond does not.Explain.

Open in App
Solution

  • Diamond has four valence electrons and all four valence electrons are used up in the formation of four single bonds. As result, there are no free electrons. Since electrons are responsible for conduction, a diamond is neither a conductor of heat nor of electricity.
  • Graphite is a good conductor of electricity due to the presence of free or mobile electrons.
  • Therefore diamond is a bad conductor and graphite is a good conductor of electricity.
