Explain the role of root pressure in water movement in plants.

Root pressure

  1. The positive pressure developed in the roots of plants by the active absorption of nutrients from the soil is called root pressure.

Role of root pressure

  1. The water and minerals absorbed by the cortical cells of roots increase the pressure in the xylem and push the water in the upward direction.
  2. This pressure pushes water up to short heights and does not play a role in tall trees.
  3. During the early morning of the spring season and rainy season, when the rate of evaporation is less then root pressure is maximum.
  4. It is measured using a manometer.
