Question

Answer the following questions in short.

How does the density of a substance vary with change in temperature?

Solution

  1. Density is defined as the mass per unit volume.
  2. The mathematical equation for density is
    Density=MassVolume.
  3. When the substances are heated, some of the molecules begin to move faster and farther apart.
  4. This results in an increase in the volume of the substance.
  5. Increase in volume results in a decrease in density.
  6. Thus, the density decreases on increasing the temperature.
  7. Similarly, the density increases on decreasing the temperature.

Thus, the density of a substance is inversely proportional to the temperature.
