Why the compounds of transition elements are coloured?

Transition elements show coloured compunds. The compound in which metal ion has an unpaired electron that compounds are coloured. When an electron from a lower energy d-orbital is excited to a higher energy d-orbital,if the energy of excitation lies in the visible region , complementary colour is observed.
