Solution

(a) No, Madame Loisel was not happy with her marriage with an ordinary clerk. To substantiate this point, the narrator says,

Mathilde suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born to enjoy all delicacies and all luxuries. She was distressed at the poverty…’

(b) Madame Loisel avoided visiting her friend because she felt sad when she came back home.

(c) The husband was surprised because instead of being glad, Madame Loisel threw the invitation on the table.

(d) She felt reluctant to go to the ball because she did not have an appropriate dress or jewels.

(e) The story says that Mattilde was a great success at the ball. The following lines help in this conclusion.

She was prettier than any other woman present…. All the men who looked at her asked her name, sought to be introduced. All the attaches of the cabinet wished to waltz with her. She was remarked upon by the minister himself.”

(g) ‘All was ended for her’ at one level means that her success at the ball had ended. At another level, it means that the relatively comfortable life which she had led till then had ended.

(i) ‘Her’ refers to Madame Loisel.

(ii) The things that had ended for her were invitations to balls, the luxury of a servant, sufficient lodgings, etc.

(h) Madame Forestier means that her necklace was not real, but a fake copy.

(i) (i) Went back over the whole route to see whether he could find it

(ii) Went to the police headquarters

(iii) Visited the newspaper offices

(iv) Went to the cab companies

(v) Returned without any news
