Solution

Transpiration:

  1. The loss of water as water vapour from the aerial parts of the plant is called transpiration.
  2. Depending on the organ that performs transpiration, the different types are: stomatal transpiration, cuticular transpiration, lenticular Transpiration.

Stomatal transpiration:

  1. Stomata are minute openings present on both surfaces of leaves.
  2. Stomatal transpiration accounts for maximum transpiration in young plants .
  3. It accounts for maximum about 90% transpiration in plants.
  4. They facilitate the exchange of gases between the leaf and the atmosphere.

Cuticular transpiration:

  1. Cuticle is a waxy layer secreted by the epidermis of the leaves and young stems of the plant.
  2. Cuticle is an impermeable covering present on the leaves and stem.
  3. Cuticular transpiration accounts for only 3-10% of the total transpiration.

Lenticular transpiration:

  1. A lenticel are small openings in the bark that enable air to reach the remaining parts of the root system.
  2. Lenticles occur in woody branches of the trees .
  3. They are special openings on the older stem in place of stomata.
  4. The lenticular transpiration accounts about 0.1% of the total transpiration.

Rate of transpiration:

  1. The maximum rate transpiration occurs through stomata that accounts of 90% of the total transpiration in plants.
  2. The minimum rate transpiration occurs through lenticels that accounts of 0.1% of the total transpiration in plants.
