The following are some of the problems of water transport in India:
1. It is an unfavourable source of transport, as people generally prefer faster modes of transport, such as airways and railways.
2. The operational cost of waterways has also increased due to increasing wage rates and maintenance costs.
3. It is badly affected by unfavourable weather conditions and natural calamities, such as floods, storms and tsunami.
4. Often there are losses on account of delays in loading and unloading of cargo, lack of ports, etc.
5. Indian ships face tough competition from foreign counterparts on account of low tonnage capacity.
