Antenna of the cockroach, a threadlike elongated structure, arises from membranous sockets present in front of the eyes.

It has approximately 140 segments. The first two proximal segments (present near sockets) are named as scape and pedicel respectively and the distal segments are termed flagellum.

Function of the antennae

1. The antenna contains mechanoreceptors helping the cockroaches in tactile (touch) sensory functions.

2. The antennae also have receptors for smell, taste, humidity and heat.

Cockroaches are nocturnal arthropods and therefore the tactile receptors present on the antennae of the cockroach help it to sense the presence of objects around it.

The antennae are more concerned with touch perception than the other senses of smell or taste
