Question

are all comproportionation reactions are redox reactions?

Open in App
Solution

Read the question as disproportionation reaction.

Yes. All disproportionation reactions are redox reaction. Because disproportionation reaction means one molecule gets oxidised and another molecule gets reduced. So there is change in oxidation number occurs.( Increase in oxidation number is oxidation and decrease in oxidation number is reduction). For ex.,
2 Cu+ Cu + Cu2+The oxidation no of Cu in left side is +1. In the right side its 0 and +2.So in the reactionCu+ Cu, the oxidation number is changed from +1 to 0. Thus it gets reduced. In the reactionCu+ Cu, the oxidation number is changed from +1 to +2. Thus it gets oxidised. So the disproportionation reactions are redox reactions.
