Question

Are all the five bonds in PCl5 molecule equivalent? Justify your answer.

Open in App
Solution

Hybridization of P in PCl5:

Electronic configuration of

15P 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p3
valence electrons
Number of monovalent atoms =5
Steric number(n)
=Number of bond pair+lone pair
=5+0
=5

For n=5 sp3d hybridization.

Hence, P in PCl5 has sp3d hybridization.

P in PCl5 has sp3d hybridization with trigonal bipyramidal shape.
Types of bonds in PCl5 molecule

PCl5 has a trigonal bipyramidal structure and the three equatorials PCl bonds are equivalent, while the two axial bonds are different and longer than equatorial bonds.

Hence, in PCl5 all five bonds are not equivalent.
