Question

Are animal cells and plant cells eukaryotic or prokaryotic? Why do you say so?

Solution

Prokaryotic cells:

  1. A prokaryotic cell contains a ‘nucleoid’ instead of a true nucleus.
  2. Nucleoid is an irregular-shaped region of the cell that contains circular DNA.
  3. Prokaryotic cells have 70S ribosomes. Moreover, they also lack membrane-bound organelles.

Eukaryotic cells:

  1. Eukaryotic cells possess a nucleus that is enclosed by the nuclear membrane.
  2. Eukaryotic DNA is linear and they contain 80S ribosomes. Various membrane-bound organelles are also present in eukaryotes.

Animal cells and plant cells:

  1. Animal cells and plant cells are eukaryotic.
  2. Both of them contain a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, vacuole, Golgi bodies, lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, etc.
  3. In addition, another membrane-bound cell organelle called chloroplast is only found in plant cells.
