Question

Are archegonia asexual?

Open in App
Solution

Archegonia:

  1. Archegonia are found in the gametophyte phase of bryophytes (e.g., moss) and pteridophytes (e.g., ferns).
  2. They are also present in some gymnosperms (e.g., cycads, conifers) but in reduced form.
  3. An archegonium comprises a narrow neck consisting of 4-6 rows of neck canal cells. The neck canal cells create a passage for the entry of sperms.
  4. Archegonia are not asexual. They are female sex organs that produce eggs (female gametes).
