Are ascomycetes unicellular?

Open in App
Solution

Ascomycetes:

  1. Ascomycetes or sac-fungi are eukaryotic organisms that belong to the phylum Ascomycota.
  2. They exogenously produce asexual spores called ‘conidia’ on conidiophores.
  3. On the other hand, sexual spores named ‘ascospores’ are produced endogenously in sac-like asci.
  4. Unicellular organisms are made of only one cell. Example: Bacteria, Protists, etc.
  5. Ascomycetes are rarely unicellular (e.g., Saccharomyces).
  6. They are mostly multicellular, consisting of more than one cell (e.g., Penicillium).
