Question

Are Birds Ammonotelic?

Open in App
Solution

Ammonotelic

  1. Organisms that emit nitrogenous waste in the form of ammonia are known as ammonotelic organisms.
  2. Ammonia is a toxic chemical that can excrete only in the presence of enough water.
  3. Examples of ammonotelic creatures include aquatic species like most fish species, protozoans, crustaceans, and platyhelminths.

Uricotelic

  1. Uricotelic organisms are those that emit uric acid as a nitrogenous waste product.
  2. Uric acid excretion is the least hazardous as compared to the other two ammonia and urea thus requiring the least water.
  3. Examples of uricotelic organisms are snakes, lizards, and birds.
  4. Thus, birds are uricotelic and not ammonotelic.
