Question

Are bryophytes heterosporous?

Open in App
Solution

Heterosporous:

  1. Organisms that produce two types of spores are different in size and sex.
  2. The male microspore and the female megaspore, develop into separate male and female gametophytes.
  3. Heterosporous plants include all seed-bearing plants and certain ferns and other seedless plants.

Bryophyte:

  1. These plants are non-vascular, seedless, and non-flowering.
  2. They are homosporous – that means, they produce only one kind of spores.
  3. Thus, bryophytes are not heterosporous.
  4. Examples- liverworts, mosses, and hornworts.
