Question

Are cells living things? How do cells get the enegy to do work?

Open in App
Solution

Cells are considered to be living because they have the characteristics of living things. Cells can grow, feed, multiply and also die, though there are some cells such as matured red blood cells, that do not have all the characteristics of being alive.

Cells get the energy by breaking down food molecules to release the stored chemical energy by a process called glycolysis. Oxygen is used to oxidize the food. The main oxidized food is sugar (glucose).
