Question

Are cnidarians diploblastic or triploblastic?

Open in App
Solution

Germ layers

  1. During embryonic growth, the cells undergo division and categorize into different layers, each capable of giving rise to a set of tissues and organs. Based on the number of germ layers, organisms are divided into the following types.
  2. Diploblastic organisms have two embryonic layers- the endoderm and ectoderm and lack the mesodermal layer.
  3. Triploblastic organisms have all three embryonic layers- endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm.

Cnidarians:

  1. All cnidarians are diploblastic. They also show a tissue level of organization.
  2. Example: Actiniaria (sea anemone), Pennatula (sea pens).
