Cnidocytes

  1. Animals that belong to the phylum Cnidaria are diploblastic and show a tissue level of organization. Their body tissues are derived from the two germ layers- ectoderm and endoderm.
  2. Example: Actiniaria (sea anemone), Pennatula (sea pens).
  3. They possess a body cavity with only one opening.
  4. All cnidarians contain specialized cells that play important roles in defense and capturing prey. These cells are known as cnidocytes, nematocyte, or cnidoblasts.
  5. This cell consist of cnidocyst, a secretory organelle. It is capable of delivering a sting to other organisms.
