Question

Are cockroaches ureotelic?

Open in App
Solution

Cockroaches:

  1. Cockroaches are black or brown-colored insects that belong to the phylum Arthropoda.
  2. Ureotelic animals excrete nitrogenous waste in the form of urea. These organisms require less water compared to those that eliminate waste in the form of ammonia.
  3. Example: amphibians, cartilaginous fishes, mammals, bony fishes.
  4. Cockroaches are not ureotelic. They are called ‘uricotelic’ since they excrete nitrogenous waste in the form of uric acid.
  5. Uric acid has the least solubility in water and is not toxic compared to ammonia and urea.
