  1. Diatoms are the algae placed under the Chrysophytes group of Kingdom Protista.
  2. They consist of carotenoids and chlorophyll that aid in photosynthesis.
  3. Diatoms exhibit gliding motion via secretion of an adhesive mucilage.
  4. Reproduction occurs through the formation of the furrow (asexual mode) and the formation of gametes (sexual mode).
  5. Since diatoms exhibit movement, reproduction, production of food, metabolism, etc they are characterized as living organisms.
  6. Examples- Navicula, Rutilaria, Eunotia, Cyclotella, Epithemia, etc are diatoms.
