  3. Fossilization of the silica skeleton over billions of years results in the formation of 'diatomaceous earth'
  4. Diatomaceous earth being gritty in nature has mild abrasive properties and is used in many products like toothpaste and tooth powder.
  5. They are used in the preparation of varnishes, filtration, dynamite base, insulation, paints, etc.
