Question

Are euglenoids mostly marine?

Open in App
Solution

Euglenoids:

  1. Euglenoids are eukaryotic, unicellular, flagellated organisms that belong to the kingdom Protista.
  2. They possess a protein-rich layer called ‘pellicle’ instead of a cell wall.
  3. They can prepare their own food and derive nutrition from other small organisms like an amoeba, algae, rotifer, etc. Hence, they follow a mixotroph mode of nutrition.
  4. Euglenoids are mostly found in freshwater habitats that are rich in organic material. Example- Euglenales.
  5. However, few of them are present in marine ecosystems (Eg.-Eutreptiales) or are endosymbionts.
