Question

Are gluconeogenesis and glycogenesis the same?

Open in App
Solution

Gluconeogenesis

  1. Gluconeogenesis is a process in which glucose is synthesized from non-carbohydrate precursors such as amino acids, glycerol, and lactic acid.
  2. Glucose is synthesized anabolically and is required to sustain life.

Glycogenesis

  1. Glycogen is synthesized from glucose through a process called glycogenesis.
  2. In humans, glycogen is stored in the liver and muscle cells of animals.
  3. This process stores reserve energy in the form of glycogen for future use.

Differences

  1. Gluconeogenesis and glycogenesis are not the same even though they help in the regulation of blood sugar levels.
  2. Gluconeogenesis involves the formation of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources, whereas, glycogenesis refers to glycogen formation from carbohydrates.
