Question

Are glucose and alcohol bases?

Open in App
Solution

Alcohol is sometimes considered neutral, as it gives pH of 7. However, according to Brønsted-Lowry's definition, it can be treated as both an acid and a base. As a base: Alcohol in acidic environment, such as in hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, is usually protonated, showing basicity.

Glucose is the carbohydrate which is an Aldo-Hexose sugar.. as It is having Aldehyde group and 6 carbon atoms.Glucose doesn't contain any acidic functional group nor basic one.. So it is chemically NEUTRAL by nature. But it can be converted into acid when it will be oxidized.
